DIRT!
Our class will be making dirt AND we will need your help! Please send peelings from carrots, potatoes, flower blossoms, leaves, and yes, WORMS to help our dirt begin composting. We will be doing this for two months and end in early May with planting flowers in the dirt we created. Hopefully the ground will soften a bit so the kids can start hunting for worms to share with our compost bin. Thank you and happy digging and collecting! There's just nothing like digging in the dirt!
BIRDS IN WINTER
If any of you have books about birds in winter and would be willing to let us borrow them next week, we would love it! Our writing will celebrate birds in late winter and the coming of spring.
Music Program Change
As you know, we have changed the first grade program to Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 pm. Please have your child here in our classroom at 6:40 pm that night. You won't be disappointed!!
Book Character Day - March 2
Wednesday, March 2 is Book Character Day at Lee Elementary. We'll have a great time that day becoming a favorite character from a favorite story.
Classroom Need
We are in need of a rug to go in our classroom. I am thinking of a 4 x 6 rug with a kid theme that you are through with using at your home. It could be 5 x 7 and work great as well. We have a cold floor spot that I plan on having the kids use for a word work spot. Thank you so much!!

Homework packets/books
I am very happy with the response to the homework packets that are sent home each day. Most of the children are returning them promptly the next day and we are able to give your child a new reading assignment or new book to take home to read.
Your involvement is making a HUGE difference. Sitting down and reading with your child is sparking a wonderful delight and importance to the value of reading. There truly is nothing like getting lost in a good book! Thank you so much for your effort in helping your child be successful!!

100's DAY ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22
It's the day we've been waiting for!! We'll be celebrating our 100th day of school on Tuesday. Yes, there still will be more schooling after that day. (It's funny that the kids think this is our last day!)
Please send a ziploc bag filled with a collection of 100 things.

Plural Words
We are also noticing what happens to words in order to make them plural (more than one). For homework, please have your child find words from books at home and make them plural: One cap, two caps.
Note: words that end in s, sh, ch, x, or z you add an "es". Some words that end in y like "bunny" you change the y to "i" and add "es".
Isn't our language a challenge!! Good luck and explore words together!

Fact Families
All this week we have been building Fact Family Houses. Ask your child what a Fact Family House is and have him/her make some on scratch paper or a white board. Do not go higher than 20 for a challenge but for most up to 15 is great. The concept is simple. The family lives under one roof and switches spots at the dinner table. The same family lives together. Have your child make some Fact Family Houses on scratch paper and turn in for homework credit.
For example: 5 + 6 = 11; 6 + 5 = 11; 11 - 5 = 6; 11 - 6 = 5. I used boxes for missing numbers and let the children figure out what numbers were missing and had them fill in the blank.
Have fun!

Early Spring Homework
I'm beginning to notice new signs that spring is peeking it's sleepy head out from under winter's blanket. When you child notices these things ( like flowers poking up through the soil, plum trees blossoming, shrubs beginning to burst into color) have your child write down what he/she sees. This is a great opportunity to make homework real and meaningful.

100's Day
It will soon be the 100th day of school. We will celebrate by having you bring a collection of 100 things to school in a ziploc bag that we can count on Tuesday, February 22. Thank you for your participation in this very fun day!
VALENTINE'S DAY
Our class will be having a Valentine's part at school the last hour beginning at 2:00 pm on Monday, February 14. If you would be willing to bring a treat and come in to help on that day I would welcome your participation. In the meantime, start early in filling out the Valentine cards for each student.
